We have some exciting news.
Dr. Beatrice Bonami has joined the team of Planetary AI as Research Fellow from May 2025. Beatrice is a STS scholar, educator, and technology decolonisation specialist.
She spent years in Africa and South America as a community engagement specialist for UN agencies and as a researcher for Governmental Research Foundations. She spent her last 4 years with the University of Tübingen with a Research Grant from DAAD Prime investigating the feasibility of a Decolonial AI created by the Global South (her field work took place in Brazil, Rwanda, and Senegal). She also taught courses on the Ethics of AI with the Computer and Data Sciences Departments in Tübingen.
Beatrice holds a joint Ph.D. in Communication and Information Sciences from the University of São Paulo [Brazil], University College London [United Kingdom], and Universita La Sapienza di Roma [Italy].
Here in Edinburgh, she will be leading the work package on materiality of AI with specific focus on the environmental costs associated with AI, particularly exploring data centres and resistance to them in the Global South.
